Q.2) The term ‘Centre’ is conspicuous by its absence in our Constitution. What such absence signifies for the federal polity of India? ( 10 Marks)

  • In the body, mention that the Constitution contains the term Union instead of Central or Centre. The selection of the term Union emphasises the consolidation and confluence of various constituents to form a strong country, term union also indicates the indestructible nature of the country as mentioned in the Constitution Assembly Debates. Sharing of power is not limited to the executive branch only it applies to the judiciary and the legislature as well.  The ‘Union government’ or the ‘Government of India’ has a unifying effect as the message sought to be given is that the government is of all.
  • Conclude by mentioning that the federal nature of the Constitution accentuated by the term Union is its basic feature and cannot be altered.
