Q.2) Regionalism can be a confidence-building measure to produce a common resolve to navigate common challenges. In light of this, list the common challenges facing the South Asian countries and also examine the role SAARC can play in stabilising the region after the US exit from Afghanistan. (10 Marks)

  • Conclude by mentioning the need for India and Pakistan to come together under SAARC for the development of the region.

      Introduction is fine, you can make it a bit more concise.

      In issues facing the region, points are fine. You can write a bit more on the emergence of Taliban after US withdrawal and concerns regarding it in difference nations due to its past record of violence and human rights violations.

      Again in SAARC’s role you can mention about a joint peacekeeping force from the SAARC region under the UN aegis could be explored in Afghanistan. Also you can mention about its significant contributions to the development of civil society and track-two initiatives. Rest of the points are good.

      This question is more about overall role of SAARC, keep Afghanistan issue limited- just mention what is the issue and how SAARC can play a role- joint peacekeeping force from the SAARC region under the UN aegis could be explored .

      After introduction mention about general issues which the region is faced with- point number 3 and 4 are fine. Unsettled territorial disputes, transborder subversive activities is true for almost the whole region, not just Afghanistan.

      In way forward mention about what role SAARC can play going ahead, question is not about India- you can give example of meeting called during the pandemic and the response it received, its significant contributions to the development of civil society and track-two initiatives, dense network of institutions, linkages, and mechanisms of SAARC can be put to use.

      After that in the 2nd part about issues faced by the region, Afghanistan is just one of the components, don’t limit your answer to Afghanistan, cover more regional issues like- unsettled territorial disputes, trans-border subversive activities, ethnic cultural and religious tension, rise of ultra-nationalism etc

You can give a bit of background about SAARC there only as it is a regional force and mention some of its confidence-building measures- videoconferencing regarding issues in the pandemic, adopted a Regional Convention on Suppression of Terrorism in 1987 and updated it in 2004 with the signing of an additional protocol to rid the region of terror and promote regional peace, stability, and prosperity.

      Challenges mentioned are fine, in role SAARC can play you can mention that its dense network of institutions, linkages, and mechanisms of SAARC can be put to use. Also it can propel development of civil society and track-two initiatives in addition to allowing for the diplomacy and coordination that is needed between member-states. Point about peacekeeping forces is good.
