Q.2) India and the US have come a long way since the 1990s. Both countries have already agreed on an ambitious agenda for bilateral, regional and global cooperation. Yet, a paradox stands out as some of the questions that animate the discourse in India have not changed since the 1990s. Comment. (15 Marks)

  • In the body, highlight the factors that indicate contradictions by first mentioning the deepening of India-US relations on various fronts from political and security cooperation, expanding economic engagement, widening interface between the two societies, and the intensifying footprint of the Indian diaspora etc. In the next part, mention the questions that still remain relevant such as the US’s stand on Kashmir, the US position on democracy and the human rights issues in India, the level of commitment in support against China etc.
  • Conclude by mentioning the need to turn the Indo-US partnership from a perennial curiosity to a regular affair.

      Introduction is fine, and convergence seen in the relationship in recent times is also fine.

      After that question is asking you to point out the contradiction between actual policy and policy debates and discourse by commentators. So don’t mention the term policymakers in skepticism part. Just mention that these issues have been persistently there in Indian debate. Points are fine. You can also mention questions asked to US regarding their level of commitment in supporting India against China.

      In way forward, you should also include points on how to remove this gap between actual policy and the debates happening in India. You can write about need to include American Studies in our institutions, also need to look at the bigger picture. Also mention that democracy and human rights is just one aspect of the relationship and this can be strengthened by improving institutional capacity in both countries as both of them have their own set of problems. Further, mention can also be made of need to cooperate on emerging issues like climate change, big tech surveillance and monopoly, pandemic etc

      Your content and knowledge fine, try to identify the drift of the question and answer accordingly for example-‘paradox’ is one of the keywords here.

      This is a 15 marks question, so I think you need to increase your content for this answer.

      Crux of your answer is fine, you need to expand on the ideas.

      Introduction is fine, in convergence of interests mention some recent examples-1) Quad and similar ideas in Indo-Pacific 2) signing of military agreements, defence deals 3) trade 4) liberal democratic principles 5) ever increasing presence of Indian diaspora in US- all these points can be mentioned.

      Debates and factors responsible part is fine. After that mention a brief way forward- you can mention the need to incorporate American Studies in Indian institutions, need to look at the bigger picture.
