Q.1 What is a bomb cyclone? Discussing the mechanism of their formation and highlight their impact on the weather pattern of the affected region. (10 Marks)

Mentor’s Comments-

  • Introduce by defining bomb cyclone. List out its important characteristics.
  • In the body, separately discuss the mechanism of formation of bomb cyclones and their impact on weather pattern of the affected region.
  • Conclude by mentioning increasing frequency and intensity of bomb cyclones due to climate change and need for climate action.

Decent attempt, your knowledge is good.
Introduction is fine. Some of the features could also be mentioned here such as they usually form in winter, between late-fall and early spring and in the Northwest Pacific and Northwest Atlantic region.
Mechanism of formation is also okay, if you can use an example to explain the points it would be good, you can use the example of bomb cyclone in US east coast. One of the factors that is positive vorticity advection due to regional topography (for example, the Appalachian Mountains running parallel to the US east coast assist the land-sea flow of winds to fill in to the cyclonic depression) can also be mentioned.
Effects mentioned are fine, formation of an atmospheric river and occurrence of flash floods due to such cyclones can also be mentioned.
      Conclusion is good.
      Keep practicing. 🙂

Decent attempt, basic concepts are good but try to do some value addition.
      Introduction is fine.
But same thing has been repeated in mechanism and characteristics.
In mechanism, other than temperature difference you can talk about lifting of the surface air affected by the regional topography (For example, the Appalachian Mountains running parallel to the US east coast assist the land-sea flow of winds to fill in to the cyclonic depression); Upper-level disturbance and Intensification of the storm (pressure drop reaches almost 24 millibars).
Impacts mentioned are fine, conclusion is also decent.
Keep practicing. Check out the model answers. 🙂

      Good attempt.
Introduction is fine, good that you have mentioned an example.
Mechanism is also decently explained, you can also add the role of regional topography in lifting of the surface air (for example, Appalachian Mountains running parallel to the US east coast assist the land-sea flow of winds to fill in to the cyclonic depression) and upper level disturbance assisting in maintaining a pressure difference.
Impacts and conclusion are fine. Formation of ‘atmospheric river’ and high waves causing flash floods could also be mentioned in impacts.
      Keep practicing. 🙂
