Q.1 Governance, during the British rule, was a means of exploitation of India rather than a vehicle of public welfare. Discuss. (15 Marks)

Mentor’s Comments-

  • Give a brief introduction of British rule in India.
  • Discuss how the British government exploited India instead of working for the welfare of people.
  • Briefly bring forward a few welfare policies during the colonial rule.
  • Conclude accordingly.

      Hello

Introduction is fine, also you can mention the timeline of the British rule.
In next parts, some more points could be added, you can substantiate by using some data too. ..for example, exploitation of Indian economy can be illustrated by mentioning that India’s share in the
world economy fell from 23% to around 3% when India got independence; Charter Act of 1813 allowed one-way free trade impacting India’s exports.
While talking about land revenues you can use examples such as Permanent Settlement; further ruralisation, deindustrialisation, commercialisation of agriculture, regular recurrence of famines as a result of colonial policy and neglect of mass education etc can be mentioned…try to cover all dimensions of exploitation..economic, political, social etc..You have mentioned the political points but other dimensions are lacking.
Rest of the answer is fine, in welfare policies social welfare in the form of banning of sati, empowerment of women etc can also be mentioned.
      Conclusion is fine.
      Keep practicing. 🙂
