Q.1 Although a bit different from modern democracy, democratic traditions have been a part of ancient Indian culture establishing the view that India is not just the world’s largest democracy, but also the “mother of democracy”. Discuss. (10 Marks)

  • In the next part, elaborate on various institutes of democracy of ancient times such as Sabha, Samiti, republics of Buddhist period, Chola village assemblies etc.
  • Follow it with elaboration of democratic traditions which were not a part of ancient India such as separation of power, fundamental rights etc.
  • Conclude by mentioning the PM’s remark of India as mother of democracy with a summarized view.

      There is lack of facts and data like when Sabha and Simiti was in existence and you have not fullfill the word limit also.

      Introduction is fine, you could explain democracy a bit more other than the quote (“government by discussion”, i.e., democracy is a system of debate, discussion and collective decision making).
      In next part, points are fine..try to add some examples..you can mention Vedic age when talking about sabha and samiti, examples of Buddhist republics such as Licchavi, Malla etc. Further, you can talk about Cholas of the 9th century had two kinds of village assemblies, Ur and Sabha. Also, while mentioning about Chanakya, explain it a bit- ideas of welfare state and rule of law.
      Next, since the question begins by saying that modern democracy is a bit different, mention some points of difference.. Equality before law (in ancient times, law was applied on the basis of a person’s castes and status); Universal adult suffrage (Republics and councils of ancient India had limited membership.); Separation of power (king was the Judge, the Jury, and the executioner); peaceful transfer did not exist in ancient time etc
      In conclusion. try to avoid being combative. 2nd last paragraph seems very aggressive, just mention that India had progressive ideas of democracy which were rare for the contemporary world at that time. Last statement is fine.
