Our open tests have the highest hit ratios because we follow 2 simple principles, 5 categories, and 80 themes.

    1. 4 categories of questions

The actual UPSC prelims paper can be said to follow broadly 5 categories – 1. Core, 2. Non-core, 3. Logical, 4. Ultra-hard (Skippable). We are aligning very closely with this distribution.

    1. Core: These questions are from core sources like standard books, monthly magazines, and Atomic Notes. You are expected to answer ALL of these questions correctly.

[2023] Consider the following organizations/ bodies in India:

    1. The National Commission for Backward Classes

    2.  The National Human Rights Commission

    3.  The National Law Commissions

    4.  The National Consumer Disputes Redressal CommissionHow many of the above are constitutional bodies?

    (a) Only one

    (b) Only two

    (c) Only three

    (d) All four

    2. Non-core: These questions are 1 level above what is present in core sources. E.g. Political Parties during the freedom movement, Ancient Medieval terms, and terms around Buddhism Jainism.

    [2023] Consider the following statements:

    1. India has more arable area than China.

    2. The proportion of irrigated area is more in India as compared to China.

    3. The average productivity per hectare in Indian agriculture is higher than that in China.

How many of the above statements are correct?

    (a) Only one

    (b) Only two

    (c)  All three

    (d) None

    3. Logical: Not solvable by knowledge alone but through logical approach.

    [2023] Consider the following statements:

    1. Some mushrooms have medicinal properties.

    2. Some mushrooms have psychoactive properties

    3. Some mushrooms have insecticidal properties

    4. Some mushrooms have bioluminescent properties.

How many of the above statements are correct?

    (a) Only one

    (b) Only two

    (c) Only three

    (d) All four

    4. Ultra-hard (Skippable): Needs to be skipped (if attempted by student, it’s a case of over-attempt. Because knowing what not to attempt is as important as knowing what to attempt.

    [2023] Consider the following fauna:

    1. Lion-tailed Macaque

    2. Malabar Civet

    3. Sambar Deer

How many of the above are generally nocturnal or most active after sunset?

    (a)  Only one

    (b) Only two

    (c)  All three

    (d) None

    2. 80 most repeated UPSC themes

We are being very precise. We won’t ask you a broad question on Species.

When it comes to high-profile species like tigers, elephants, and other critically endangered species, UPSC is asking for conservation efforts or behavioural patterns. We will ask you something similar. We are this detail-oriented.

This is true for all subjects. For instance, in Economics, detailed questions on inflation, bonds, differentiated banks, etc. are more difficult.

We have 80 detailed themes and our questions will be framed on similar lines.

[CSP2017]Q. The term ‘M-STrIPES’ is sometimes seen in the news in the context of

    (a)Captive breeding of Wild Fauna

    (b)Maintenance of Tiger Reserves

    (c)Indigenous Satellite Navigation System

    (d)Security of National Highways

[CSP2020]Q. Among the following Tiger Reserves, which one has the largest area under “Critical Tiger Habitat”?

    (a) Corbett

    (b) Ranthambore

    (c) Nagarjunsagar-Srisailam

    (d) Sunderbans

[CSP2021]Q. With reference to Indian elephants, consider the following statements:

1.The leader of an elephant group is a female.

2.The maximum gestation period can be 22 months.

3.An elephant can normally go on calving till the age of 40 years only.

4.Among the States in India, the highest elephant population is in Kerala.

Which of the statements given above is/are correct?

    (a) 1 and 2 only

    (b) 2 and 4 only

    (c) 3 only

    (d) 1, 3 and 4 only

Animesh, AIR 2 Ethics 134 | Master his frameworks

Learn the art of Mastering framework in the Ethics (GS 4) Paper. We are sharing the EXACT FRAMEWORK used by Animesh (AIR 2, UAP Student of Civilsdaily) in his Mocks.

Join FREE Webinar on 5th May, 7:00 pm

First 100 will get free mentorship session

We recently shot a Raw & Real Episode with Animesh, and we talked about how he was a below average scorer in the Interview.

But how can a below average scorer top the UPSC Exam with AIR 2? Closely analyzing his marks will tell you that he had performed SO WELL in his Mains – he had made his rank INTERVIEW PROOF.

That’s right. Even if Animesh scored 25 marks less than what he scored in the interview, he would still be Rank 11. That’s the power of an effective Mains.

But we will talk specifically about his Ethics Paper today. Animesh scored a whooping 134 marks in Ethics, one of the highest marks in the HISTORY of the Ethics Paper. Was he the most ethical person among the ~3000 odd people who wrote Mains last year?

We see students talking about how ethical they are in real life, but they aren’t getting enough marks in the paper.

The reason is simple. You don’t have to KNOW that you are ethical. You have to SHOW the examiner that you draw these principles from something concrete.

Your Ethics should be based upon theories of thinkers that you have read, or real life examples that you see in REAL world (NOT ANECDOTES which are majorly forced examples), the reading that you do daily in the newspaper, the way you THINK like a THINKER.

Analyzing Animesh’s Answer Copies with Civilsdaily, we draw some insights:

    1. Unlike other aspirants writing generic answers, Animesh exactly addresses the implicit and explicit demands of the question.

    2. Each part of the question is addressed – benefit of a proper structure.

    3. Enriched Content – Use of cliche examples (Quoting Gandhi, Kalam in all questions related to visionary leadership) is minimal. Instead, prominent usage of REAL EXAMPLES (Quoting Suo-moto cognizance of Supreme Court in Manipur – definitely a differentiator)

    4. Quoting diagrams where required – No SUPERFICIAL LANGUAGE-BASED Answers, instead KNOWLEDGE-BASED quoting of thinkers, philosophies.

    5. Writing like an OFFICER – not like the crowd who wants to sound “ETHICAL”.

This is not something we are explaining just out of our finite minds. Look at some of his answers:

Look at how he wrote a definition of Conflict of Interest. Clear and crisp. Exactly conveys the definition – leaves NO SCOPE for the examiner to deduct marks.

Similarly, look at his usage of thinkers in almost all his answers:

Starting the definition of values by Quoting how Radhakamal Mukherjee defined it.

    Quoting John Rawl’s Differential Principles

Similarly, the usage of Diagrams and its correlation with his marks is EVIDENT.

Diagram 1 – Showing Government’s Role in delivery of social justice.

Diagram 2 – Explaining Role of Education through History and quoting examples (Now that’s a NEXT LEVEL of value addition!)

    LET’S KNOW THIS.

Competition is FIERCE now. You MIGHT think you have a decent framework, you are quoting examples, you are quoting thinkers – but there is someone out there who is taking the competition to the NEXT LEVEL.

    • Quoting the MOST REAL & RELEVANT Examples which are the real differentiators
    • Using diagrams and quoting examples within the diagrams (NEXT LEVEL ENRICHMENT)
    • Most of all – having a THEME SPECIFIC FRAMEWORK (You don’t have to come up with a definition in the exam hall – know it beforehand!)

These ideas aren’t inherent. It can be built within. For how Animesh started with his first answer copy, we see a marked difference in how he improved over the time. We made sure he reached a level that competing with him would be a horse race – you lose a step, and it’s all over.

We intend to do the same thing with you guys. Shubham Sir (Senior Mentor, Civilsdaily – Mentored more than 500 rankers) will explain to you in great detail on a Strategy to Score 120+ Marks in Ethics.

This is a NO-NONSENSE STRATEGY and we’ll be delving deep into Animesh’s (AIR 2) Answer Copies, so you definitely don’t want to miss out on this.

[Working Junta Webinar] 7 Hours/Week Current Affairs Strategy for Working Professionals

Learn the effective current affairs strategy used by AIR 2 Animesh Pradhan (UPSC 2023) of preparing for UPSC as a working professional

You are a Working Professional. You decided to give the UPSC 2025 Attempt . You got a subscription of The Hindu & Indian Express both – pledging you will complete this daily and make notes.

But it’s Monday today – you start with pressure of work, managing project deadlines, attending meetings, client work – PHEW!

By the time you reach home, you are already drained, leaving you NO time to go through the newspaper.

As a working professional, managing a job with UPSC Preparation can be a tough race against time. It is difficult to even cover the syllabus, let alone managing current affairs. You still somehow manage to cover some part of the news. But then, issue of Current Affairs becomes very specific

    1. Despite having tried to read Current Affairs, you are still missing out on important news.

    2. You don’t know how to INTERLINK Current Affairs topics with the Static Portion.

    3. Some Editorials seem too complex for you to understand and grasp.

Till the end of the month, you don’t remember what you read in the first week of the same month – ZERO DISPLACEMENT, NO RECALL.

The enthusiasm slowly withers away, and your pledge to give the exam in 2025, changes to 2026, 2027, 2028…

When Animesh (Rank 2, 2023 – Our Student of UAP Mentorship) started giving his tests with us, his Static Portions weren’t very clear. Despite that, just out of going through our Samachar Manthan religiously, he was able to write answers on Static topics.

His journey was, however, not smooth. Look at his 1st Answer Copy which he wrote with us:

Animesh had enough content to write an answer for this question – because he was religious with our Samachar Manthan. But he wasn’t addressing the demand of the question.

Now look at the 50th Test Copy that he wrote:

Not only was he fulfilling the demand of the question, he was effectively using subheadings (dimensions) and examples through value-addition he could gather from Samachar Manthan.

Needless to say, this helped him secure one of the highest GS Marks this year, with 100+ Marks in all 3 papers!

We claim this – as a Working Professional, if you are not able to cope up with Newspaper, LEAVE IT. We will cover it for you. If you are a working professional, we will tell you the EXACT WAY to handle Current Affairs in 7 Hours of your Week (Specific Details – No Nonsense Strategy)

Time is money. However, in UPSC Preparation, time is the currency of success. Unfortunately, as a working professional, we always have a crunch of time.

With such a shortage of time & so many things to cover, how do we know if what we are covering is helping us make progress?

Are we giving enough time to the newspaper?

Are we doing well enough in our tests?

Are we recalling whatever we are studying?

Are we able to write decent answers?

What is that ONE METHODOLOGY that will tell you exactly HOW you can track your preparation level as a Working Professional?

With the current trends we see in UPSC, one thing is obvious – UPSC has made it a level-playing field.

More questions can be solved using ANCHORING of PYQs, rather than trying to mug up a plethora of facts, and “everything under the sun”, as most perceive it.

So, while many aspirants are trying to figure out what will work, a Working Professional, with the right approach, will nail it through razor-sharpness.

    • While full-timers will try to cover every piece of content available due to FOMO, a working professional will cut through the clutter and read only what is relevant.
    • While full-timers will read more than required, a working professional will PRACTICE themes that will be repeated each year.
    • While full-timers will start with writing Level 1 questions, a working professional will have ENOUGH UNDERSTANDING through our approach to answer EXAM-LEVEL questions.

Who will help us, working professionals, assess progress in this quest?

  • Class Apart Series: Molightson from Manipur, 2nd from his tribe is IRS

If there is only one Ranker session you should watch this year, it’s Molightson. These are rare individuals who have seen so much in life so early, they are 20 years more mature than their age!

I start the session with an interesting thought Talent is evenly distributed but ranks are not. By no means, do I want to imply that the selection process is biased. All I want to say is certain sections are more disadvantaged and it’s reflected in the numbers.

Molightson hails from Manipur. Everyone following the news understands what Manipur has been going through for the last 1-1.5 years. He is the 2nd officer from his tribe, Maring.

He starts by saying something wonderful. He not only wants people from his tribe to explore the city life, but folks from the cities to experience village life!

Talks about how UPSC is not a 1 person effort. His tribe fasted for him, and extended all possible support for him. imho, in the end, all that matters is this. Not wealth, money, or power.

In school, he was good at his studies. But this doesn’t make him unique. Many folks around him are super smart and did well in school. It is only after school that they fail to navigate through life. By some random act of chance, Molightson ends up in the Hospitality Food and Beverage sector! Post his degree, he works with Raddison Blue.

Anyone who has worked in the Hotel Industry understands that it is brutal. This experience is way beyond Molightson’s comfort zone. He talks about how 1 incident broke him, made him call his Father. He wanted to quit but he not only survives but thrives. He learns how to handle pressure which becomes the basis for his cracking the exam later in life.

This, IMHO, is the 1st instance that demonstrates the winning mindset.

Moving on, he is interested in cracking govt. exams and starts preparing. He doesn’t have UPSC in mind. Cracks a govt. department exam. Attached with an IAS officer. Brings water to his village. Improves sanitation, and way of life.

This is the 2nd instance that demonstrates the winning mindset.

It’s in 2020 that he cracks the 1st prelims. And that gives him the confidence that USPC can be done. He moves from strength to strength. It’s the small wins that stack together.

This is the 3rd instance where he demonstrates the winning mindset.

    Now, the mind games begin.

I ask him, what do you say to those whose only reason to not crack the exam is that they have never seen anyone in their position clear the exam. His theory is simple-

It didn’t matter to him how others around him were doing. He wanted to know how far he could go. “It can be liberating if you dont have any examples.”

This is the 4th instance of the winning mindset.

Facing interviews was his biggest challenge given his background. He is grilled by Aradhna Maam. And he is unfaced. And she admires him for that. Saket Sir here predicts 190 for him. If he gets lucky with the board then 200+. He gets 187.

His biggest weakness becomes his biggest strength.

This is the 5th instance of the winning mindset.

His advice – it’s not the exam. it’s your ability to handle pressure. You understand this and the game is yours.

For him, the role of mentors in this journey is undeniable, and repeats it often. What an absolute privilege to have witnessed his journey.

Current Affairs are where a UPSC aspirant is always confused, be it at any part of the journey. A newbie is concerned about so many topics to be covered, and a veteran is confused—where is UPSC asking questions from?

Further, an aspirant often gets swayed by Opinion pieces, inclining him towards the left or right side. How, then, can an aspirant ingrain only balanced views & write similar answers in the exam?

What about Working Professionals? You have less time to cover even the basics. With such a paucity of time, covering current affairs daily seems like a daunting task.

Needless to say – Current Affairs is one major area where Aspirants need to be addressed – approach, ample time, and application of Current Affairs.

Answer Booklets of Rankers serve 3 purposes

    1. You understand how answer writing standards have been rising through the years. A small eg. AIR 1, 2017 Anudeep Durishetty covered all dimensions supported by factual information. This year’s AIR 1, Ishita Kishore was a natural writer. Less facts but better structure, better flow.
    2. It is the only way to understand what UPSC considers a top-notch answer NOW in 2024.
    3. It tells you the level of competition and how far you have to go.

Writing an impactful introduction to UPSC Mains Answer

Join Arvind sir’s FREE webinar on 28th March, 6 pm

First 100 will get Civilsdaily’s Mains Toolkit

A strong introduction is your first step to standing out in UPSC Mains.

The opening lines of your answer can captivate or lose the examiner’s interest.

It’s not just an introduction; it’s your chance to make a memorable first impression.

Crafting the perfect start is an art that sets the tone for your entire answer.

An impactful introduction reflects a deep understanding of the question and its context.

It’s about more than answering the question; it’s about showcasing your analytical prowess.

But what makes an introduction truly engaging and effective?

Join Arvind Sir as he reveals the strategies IAS toppers use to craft winning introductions in UPSC Mains answers.

Read what Arvind Agrawal sir has to say about UPSC Answer Writing

    “Hi everyone,

I’m Arvind Agrawal, leading the UPSC Mains Program. Today, I want to share something important about writing answers in UPSC Mains, especially how you start them.

The first few lines of your answer can really catch the examiner’s eye. It’s like making a first good impression. Whether the question is about government reforms or women’s rights, starting right matters.

It’s also about making things clear from the beginning. Mentioning a recent event when talking about climate change, for example, can make your answer more relevant. Answering the question directly, like when discussing Indian federalism’s challenges, shows you know what’s being asked.

A good start can set up your whole answer, telling the examiner what to expect.

It’s about engaging the reader, sparking interest with a pertinent fact or quote, perhaps something thought-provoking by Amartya Sen on development.

But it’s not just about grabbing attention. It’s about showing you understand the question and can think deeply about it. This is what we’re going to focus on in our upcoming webinar. We’ll look at how IAS toppers write their introductions to make their answers stand out.

I’ll share tips on how to do this yourself, making sure your answers are not just read but remembered. This webinar is for anyone looking to improve their scores by writing better answers from the very first line.

I hope you’ll join me. It’s a chance to learn something that could really make a difference in your UPSC Mains preparation.

    See you at the webinar!

Atomic Notes will ensure that everything you need to repeatedly revise and memorize is in one place. The best part, they are free to download and are available in PDF format for easy access.

Atomic Notes is the *only* Monthly CA you should refer to. Add new sources once you have covered Atomic Notes 100% end to end.

Attempt UPSC Prelims Previous Year Questions(PYQs)-yearwise and subject-wise

Attempt PYQs Live with detailed solutions

Every topper has attempted UPSC Prelims PYQs. In fact many toppers have spent 3-4 months analyzing prelims questions. Needless to say, without attempting PYQs, you wont be able. PYQs are important because-

    1. Only through PYQs you get a clue about what and how UPSC is thinking. Without PYQs you will keep working on your own assumptions and that will not yield results.
    2. You understand the high-priority themes for UPSC. You can’t be studying like an 11th or 12th grader and then expect to clear the exam. These are not boards.
    3. Within those high-priority themes, the depth and dimensions being asked are very important. You have to closely observe them.
    4. Undertanding question framing, options.
    5. Attempting PYQs means simulating real exam conditions. Each question will appear like a bouncer. But can’t duck. You need to take shots.

Once you attempt the PYQs, you will be emailed your attempt along with detailed explanations. The solution has been upgraded using UPSC answer key. We suggest you start attempting the paper from 2013. By the time to reach 2021, 2022 your marks should see an improvement.

Every moment, at least 100 live attempters are appearing for the exam.

Why Civilsdaily Mentorship and Programs Are Unique?

    Element No. 1: The System

The first element of the powerful mentorship program at CD is – The System.

The system is the method that is used during the program. One of the first surprising elements of a Civilsdaily program is that we do an early assessment of the current stage of aspirants. This is done in 10+ dimensions. Along with that, you get a lot of study material in advance. Unlike other courses that give you average content when the course begins, you get high-quality content for UPSC Prep well in advance. The reason for this is simple: The Mentor is not around to create “shock and awe”. Instead, the element that really helps learning is the “safe zone”. When aspirants get the material in advance, it gives them time to learn and absorb it. And then, when the initial assessments happen in the form of mock tests, the aspirant is able to apply the learning.

One big reason we fail to learn and progress in UPSC Prep is that we do not have time to practice and attempt mocks.

No one is around to correct our mistakes. All we get is an endless stream of information, and mastery over exam is further away than ever. The notes themselves need design: lots of examples, relevance to PYQs, and easy-to-read language. The syllabus content needs to be broken up into consumable chunks. It’s design, design and more design. Check our atomic and flash notes, and you will understand what we mean. A well-constructed system is the first element of the program at CD but by no means the most important.

Trying to cope with breathless content all at once is extremely intimidating for the aspirants. When you’re in a Civilsdaily Mentorship program, you get the content well in advance. There’s no need to create “shock and awe” while mentoring. You learn better when you know and own the content, using the course to practice and get better at it instead.

    Element No. 2: The Group

A journey of a thousand miles can be really intimidating without a group because UPSC -CSE requires MCQ and answer writing aptitude, which requires constant practice. When you work alone, it’s easy to give up or get distracted. A group is what gets you ahead. But how do you get a group that’s focused, smart, and helpful? Do such groups even exist?

There’s a saying in Africa: If you want to go quickly, go alone. If you want to go far, go with a group. And yet, not any group will do, will it? You’ve been in Telegram groups before, and the terms “kind, helpful and smart” don’t come to mind, do they?

The one thing that will amaze you at Civilsdaily is how much you come to rely on your group. At first, many aspirants assume that their progress is a lonely journey. They learn what’s required, do their mocks, and when the course is done, they get to the finish line.

And yet habit-creation reveals something entirely different.

Snagging a bad habit is relatively easy. The moment you have to build a “good habit,” it’s a lot harder to stay motivated—unless, of course, you have a group.

The aspirant groups at the Civilsdaily course are brilliant, focused and helpful.

It almost seems hard to find such an active, helpful bunch of people. And the reason why you’ll find this level of camaraderie here, is because of several reasons. But the biggest reason of all is because we’re selective.

We only let people in if they pass our filters.

We also will not have overloading of any kind. Our program accepts limited aspirants. You simply will not see the ocean full of aspirants you see on other courses. Finally, we break up the groups into even smaller groups of six or seven aspirants. We keep it small and focused. This gets you closer to the finish line. In short, you go far.

Element No. 3: Daily and Weekly Practice

Without practice, mastery of this exam is difficult. Without daily and weekly practice, you have a “decay problem.” Other courses will give you content and mocks once a month and won’t provide any kind of mentor feedback. This is a recipe for disaster. You won’t know if you are making any progress at all.

That’s not how we run our programs.

When you’re a part of the Civilsdaily Mentorship program, whether you’re a beginner or veteran, you have a schedule that is unique to you and your requirements for the duration of the program. As you’d expect, all this is designed with “tiny increments” in mind, but it is the daily and weekly practice that keeps away the decay.

And everything is enriched with a 1:1 mentor call.

Your Mentor checks your preparation and works with you to ensure progress—there is no exception. This enables you to learn bit by bit instead of being dumped with endless content that you might never use in an exam. When you consider all three elements: the system, the group, and the daily and weekly practice, you are able to create a habit. This habit leads to success in exam.

Any new subject or mock can be a little unnerving when you don’t get regular practice. Our program is designed to help you learn layer by layer, and it involves small steps done daily. That way, if you press the “wrong button,” we can learn from the mistake, fix it, and move ahead at an even pace.

This attention to detail is what makes the Civilsdaily Mentorship Program among the best. But you’ll find that out for yourself.

The heart of the Civilsdaily platform is the Foundation Program and Ultimate Assessment Program (UAP). For years, aspirants have enrolled here because they couldn’t find such depth and passion towards quality content and Mentorship anywhere. Their search inevitably ends at Civilsdaily. Enrollment in these programs and Mentorship also makes us accountable to aspirants for the value they get.

In the past few years, we’ve worked quietly in the background with hundreds of aspirants; many now serve as IAS, IPS, IFS, and more. We are very proud of what we’ve achieved. Here are some of the recent rankers who show us gratitude.
