Q.2 Multilateral negotiations will be increasingly difficult in the present chaotic global situation. It is only by working bilaterally with potential allies that India can attain the status of a pole in the new world with steadfast friends and followers. Critically examine. (15 Marks)

  • In the intro, mention the geopolitical changes the world is going through in the aftermath of covid and the Ukraine war.
  • In the body, mention the challenges in negotiating at the multilateral platform in the fast polarising world. Mention BRICS and the current contradictions as China tries to hijack it. In the next part, mention G7 focused on the war, next mention G20 and challenges it faces in arriving at solutions to the challenges global order faces today. However, India also has the opportunity to lead the negotiation using its position.
  • Conclude by mentioning the need to focus on bilateral negotiations.

Introduction is fine, after that current situation part is unnecessary, you could mention the issues broadly in the introduction itself.
The question is about multilateralism and bilateralism, first mention the challenges that multilateralism is facing- you can pick some multilateral agreements and mention the issues there in for example BRICS, G7, G20, WTO..
Next, you can mention the advantages of bilateralism- points mentioned by you here are good, after that some reasons why multilateralism is still relevant can be mentioned( SDG, nuclear cooperation are good points, you can mention opportunity for India to get into a leadership role, build consensus over issues etc).
      Way forward is fine.
Later part of your answer is decent but challenges that multilateralism is facing is major portion that you have missed.
Keep practicing. Go through the article above. 🙂

Introduction is fine, some emphasis could also be given on ‘chaotic world order’ by mentioning issues like the pandemic and the disruption caused due to it, Russian invasion of Ukraine, hegemonic rise of China and it’s expansionist policies, withdrawal of US from Afghanistan etc
In next part, first point is good.. In later points too substantiate them using BRICS, G7, G20 as examples.
Next part about advantages of bilateralism is fine, some recent initiatives like CEPA with UAE, ECTA with Aus could be used as examples.
In next section, mention relevance of multilateralism ( achievement of SDGs, cooperation on climate change, nuclear energy, dealing with terrorism, opportunity for India to get into a leadership role, build consensus over issues etc). In questions asking to critically examine, both sides of the argument need to be presented.
Conclusion is fine, however, do not completely rule out multilateralism, a balanced approach can be taken.
Overall, the structure of the answer is fine but try to enrich it with examples of current relevance.
      Keep practicing. 🙂
