Q.2 What are the issues with opinion polls in India? Suggest the way forward. (10 Marks)

Mentor’s comment-
  • In the introduction, mention the repeated demand for ban on opinion polls.
  • In the body, mention issues such as biased nature of polls, manipulation, lack of information about polls, which results in lack of free and fair elections, and also undue influence.  In the way forward mention setting up an independent regulator,  self-regulation etc.
  • Conclude by mentioning the need to make elections free and fair by regulating opinion polls.

Opinion polls have not yet been banned, so you can avoid saying that in your answer.
Intro is fine, issues mentioned are also decent, some more things can be added- prevalence of paid news, opinion polls might be paid for ; Subtle propaganda on casteist, religious and ethnic basis; betting; issue of transparency.
Other points such as undue influence on voters, biasness etc are good.
You can mention a section on restrictions imposed till now- constitutional aspect( right to free speech is not absolute whereas right to conduct free and fair elections is absolute) ; restrictions against disinformation in RPA.
Solutions other than point 1 are decent enough. You can also talk about formation of a body such as Indian Polling Council to exclusively look into such matters, mandatory disclosure about the process vof opinion polls etc.
      Conclusion is fine.
      Keep practicing. 🙂
