Q.3 Examine the purpose of the Minimum Support Price declared by the government for crops and the implications of providing legal backing to it? Suggest the way forward. (10 Marks)

  • In the intro, mention the recent repeal of the farm laws by the government and the formation of the committee to ensure MSP for all farmers.
  • In the body, mention various interpretations of the legal backing and challenges in its implementation such as fiscal constraints and practical difficulties in the nationalisation of agricultural trade.
  • In the suggestions mention using MSP for price stabilisation purpose only by establishing a price monitoring mechanism, using MSP for crops other than rice and wheat to reduce import dependence and ensuring food security, the inclusion of pulses, millets and edible oils in PDS etc.
  • Conclude by mentioning the need to need to use MSP as suggested here to protect a sector that remains the largest employer and a refuge for the poor and vulnerable as was seen during the pandemic.

      Introduction can be framed in a better way, it is not market price..it is the price at which the government procures the crops in case the market price falls below it. Also, you can mention number of crops etc
      Before coming to implications, first mention some advantages of MSP, then mention what are the interpretations of legalizing MSP for e.g..mandatory enforcement of trade in agricultural produce, including private trade to be necessarily at or above the MSP for that crop or the government might have to buy all the crop produced at MSP
      Implications are fine..especially first two points, other points might not necessarily be true..
      Way forward is fine. Conclusion is good too.
      Need to work a bit on your handwriting, also you can start points with no.1 in each subheading..no need to continue.
      Keep practicing..try to address all parts of the question. 🙂

      Intro is fine, purpose of MSP is well written.
      Implications and constraints part is good. Nice points.
      Suggestions are not mentioned. Incorporate them.

      In intro, first you can mention what is MSP before talking about how is it calculated.
      Purpose is well written, you can mention avoiding distress sale in case of excess produce etc too.
      Before mentioning implications of legalizing, first mention what do you understand by legalizing- or atleast what are the interpretations going around- mandatory enforcement of trade in agricultural produce, including private trade to be necessarily at or above the MSP for that crop or the government might have to buy all the crop produced at MSP.
      Implications mentioned are fine, 3rd example is not clear..you are using too much flowcharts..some parts of the answer can be written in points..try to combine both approaches..use points for answering the crux of the question and flowchart for the additional parts so that you can address them crisply and put in more content.
      Way forward and conclusion are good.
